Things to know before  purchasing a  wheelchair

What is a manual wheelchair?

A manual wheelchair is defined by large rare wheels allowing the users to be self-propelled and also the caregivers to push the wheelchair. These all-around wheelchairs are good for both indoor and outdoor wheelchairs.

What is the weight of the wheelchair?

Wheelchairs come in different weights. The weight of the manual wheelchairs available in Sri Lanka ranges from 12kg to 30 kg. Lightweight wheelchairs are easy to use but not freely available in Sri Lanka. If you are looking for a lightweight wheelchair you can buy an aluminium wheelchair but they are a bit pricey.

How to choose the size of the wheelchair?

Wheelchairs come in three main sizes. Narrow, medium and large. The narrow wheelchair width is around 16 inches and is suitable for people below 50 kg. Medium wheelchair width is around 18 inches and is suitable for people below 130kg. Large wheelchairs are around 20 inches and designed for people above 130 kg.

Type of armrest

 The armrest can be fixed, Flipped back (adjustable) or removable. Most basic wheelchairs have fixed armrests, however, if you are looking for extra convenience  better to buy a wheelchair with an  adjustable armrest

Is wheelchair foldable

Wheelchairs are either foldable or fixed. It is always better to buy a foldable wheelchair. However, if you have enough space in the home and not planning to take it on your vehicle you can buy a fixed wheelchair Such as LB 693 ( wheelchair with castor wheels )

What tools do You need to assemble a wheelchair?

Wheelchairs come fully assembled and you do not need any tools. All you need to do is unbox the wheelchair and hook the armrest when necessary. For commode wheelchairs, you just need to insert the bucket under the seat.

What type of leg rest?

Wheelchair leg rest can be adjustable or fixed. Adjustable leg rests come with additional padding to the calf so it gives extra comfort.

Do you need a special wheelchair?

Depending on your disease requirement you might need a special type of wheelchair. These include reclining wheelchairs, CP type wheelchairs etc.
