Different Types of Wheelchairs-What suits you best?

Since the first commercial wheelchair was made there had been numerous types and models of wheelchairs were made. It is not surprising to see someone get confused when selecting a wheelchair for a patient. In this article, we are trying to discuss the most frequently sold wheelchair types in Sri Lanka. Even though it is impossible to cover all types of wheelchairs in the market we have done a fairly comprehensive list.

Broadly there are two main types of wheelchairs. Motorized or self-propelled wheelchairs and Manual wheelchairs.

Motorized wheelchairs

Electric wheelchairs are powered with rechargeable batteries. These are controlled with hand leavers these are very convenient to the user and can be used without a caregiver. These wheelchairs are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. These wheelchairs are designed two overcome the main problem with manual wheelchairs which is fatigue. self-propelled wheelchairs are a common sight in developed countries however not frequently seen in Sri Lanka. The main disadvantage of electric wheelchairs is their size. They are very bulky and not easy to store and transport.

Manual wheelchairs

These are the most frequently sold wheelchairs in Sri Lanka. These wheelchairs should be manually propelled by the user or someone should push it from behind. Some wheelchairs are specially designed to be operated by the caretakers whereas others can be operated by the user or a caretaker. There are different types of manual wheelchairs

  1. Commode wheel chairs
  2. Basic Wheel chairs
  3. Reclinig wheelchairs
  4. Wheel Chairs with leg support
  5. Wheel chairs with romovable /adjustable hand rest
  6. Paediatric wheel chairs

Commode wheel chairs

The wheelchairs come with an inbuilt commode seat. So can easily be converted to a commode by removing a part of the seat. This is very convenient to the patient and the caregiver as it is not necessary to move the patient from a wheelchair to the commode or commode seat.

Reclining wheelchair

These wheelchairs have a long backrest that can be reclined to 180 degrees. So the patient can lie down or have a nap without getting off the wheelchair. Since they have a long backrest these are good for patients with reduced back strength and neck control such as cerebral palsy.

Wheelchairs with additional leg support

These come with adjustable leg support which supports the back of the legs. These are better for patients with lower limb fractures and patients with ulcers in the heal. However one should avoid continuous pressure over one point as it can lead to a pressure sore.

Pediatric wheelchairs

These are wheelchairs specially designed for children. They can be either manual or self-propelled. They come in different sizes and with supportive belts so safer for the user.
